Spartans Bash Their Way to Doubleheader Sweep

YORK, PA. – The York College baseball team smashed their way to a doubleheader sweep of Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon outscoring the Knights 30-9 in the two games.

How It Happened:

• York got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame after Austin Denlinger doubled to center field and would come in to score on a single to left field off the bat of Brandon White. After Southern Virginia was held without a baserunner through the first two innings, they would finally break through with a pair of runs in the third inning. After back-to-back walks to start the innings, the Knights would score on a sac fly and then a Cole Critchfield single to center to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third.

• The Spartans would answer in the bottom of the fourth using a pair of singles from Rob Acierno and Garrett Southern before a Jimmy Wiegers fielder's choice would bring in Acierno to the game up 2-2. After a scoreless fifth innings, Ryan Morin would launch an RBI-triple to deep right-center field to take a 3-2 lead. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the sixth scoring three runs in the frame. Wiegers would launch a two-run homer to center field to take the lead back followed by an RBI-single from Denlinger to extend the Spartan lead to 5-3 after six innings of play.

• The back-and-forth scoring continued as the Knights tallied three runs on five hits to retake the lead once again. Jake Herr came in to the game in relief and struck out the last two batters of the inning stranding a pair of Knight runners on base. The Spartans then responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Acierno led off the inning with a single through the left side and would advance to third on a ball hit by Southern who would reach via an error to set the table to the Spartans. Wiegers would bring in Acierno on a single to right field followed by a sac fly from Justin Kilpatrick to give York a 7-6 lead after seven innings.

• In the eighth, Brady Lamb would shoot a solo homerun to right field to tie the game back up 7-7. The Spartans would then explode offensively scoring 6 runs in the frame. York used five hits to score the six runs. Acierno singled to start things off followed by a double by Southern. Wiegers was intentionally walked to load the bases followed by an error by the Knights off the bat of Kilpatrick to bring in the first run. Southern would then score on a passed ball followed by a two-RBI double from Craig Wiley to bust the game wide open. York would add two more runs on a Grant Oberholtzer triple and Denlinger single. The Knights would add one in the ninth but the big eighth inning propelled the Spartans to the 13-8 win in game one.

How It Happened:

• It did not take long for the Spartans to get on the board as they put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take firm control of the game early on. The Spartans took advantage of three Knight errors in the opening frame to go along with three hits to score the five runs. RBI hits were picked up by Rob Acierno and Bailey Doan. With the other two runs coming on a passed ball and an RBI-groundout by Jack Barry.

• York was not done scoring as they added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Spartans got RBI-singles from Acierno and Jimmy Wiegers to extend the Spartan advantage to 8-0. In the bottom of the fourth, York went off for four more runs on three more hits for the Spartans. Brandon White scored on an error off the bat of Acierno followed by back-to-back RBI-singles from Craig Wiley and Doan. York led 12-0 after four innings of play and was in complete control of the game. A Wiegers two-run double in the bottom of the fifth would extend the Spartan lead to 14-0 while Brandon Haggerty held the Knights hitless through five innings.
• The Knights would finally get their first hit in the top of the sixth but would get nothing further still being held scoreless by the Spartan pitching staff. Bryan Bell would add two more runs on a two-run single to center field as York ballooned their lead to 16-0. Each team would add a run in the seventh inning as York cruised to a 17-1 win in game two.

Notes: The Spartans are now 11-3 all-time against Southern Virginia … York picked up their first three-game series sweep on the season and has now won six games in a row … the Spartan offense combined for 30 runs on 34 hits in the inning … the Spartans set a season-high 15 RBI in game two of the doubleheader … York stole eight bases as a team after having just three in the first six games of the season … Jimmy Wiegers continues to stay hot offensively as he now is hitting .433 and has team-leading two homeruns and 16 RBI … Austin Denlinger had a career-high four hits in game one and went a combined 5-for-8 in the doubleheader and now leads the team with a .438 batting average … four Spartans now have double-digit runs led by Rob Acierno with 18 runs … Brandon Haggerty took a no-hitter into the sixth and picked up his second win on the year … Zac Stoll picked up his first win on the season out of the bullpen in game one … Robert Chaney, Rory Costello, and AJ Vincenzi all made their Spartan debuts with scoreless innings from all three pitchers.
