Oberholtzer's Grand Slam Lifts Spartans to Upset of #2 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Grant Oberholtzer's ninth inning grand slam lifted the Spartan baseball team to an upset of #2 Christopher Newport as York split with the Captains in their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened:

• The Captains got off to a hot start scoring three runs in the first inning on four hits. Seth Woodard doubled down the left field line to score Connor Clark all the way from first to open the scoring. Next batter, Nick DiNapoli singled to right field to bring in Woodard. A bases-loaded walk later in the inning would bring in the final run as CNU took an early 3-0 lead.

• After four scoreless innings, the Spartans would tie the game scoring three runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning. Jack Barry singled to right field to bring in Austin Denlinger for the first run followed by a two-run homer by Brandon White to tie the score 3-3.

• The Captains would answer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Woodard doubled down the left field line again, this time scoring Joseph Cutchins to start the scoring. CNU would then get back-to-back homers from DiNapoli and Nicholas Baham to push the lead out to 7-3.

• York was held to just one hit over the final two innings as the Spartans dropped the opener 7-3.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans opened the scoring in the first inning with Grant Oberholtzer scoring on a Luke Turner double to right center field. The Captains would respond in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back home runs by Nick DiNapoli and Nicholas Baham as CNU led 2-1 after one.

• York would get that run back when Oberholtzer scored on a Turner RBI-groundout in the third inning. Baham would strike again in the bottom of the frame with a two-run blast to left field as the Captain retook the lead 4-2.

• The Spartans would tie the game again in the fourth scoring two runs on just one hit as they walked four times in the inning including back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Oberholtzer and Austin Denlinger to tie the score 4-4. CNU again answered in the bottom of the frame plating three runs on five hits on RBI-hits by Joseph Cutchings, Connor Clark, and Seth Woodard. CNU would leave the bases-loaded in the inning but led 7-4 after four innings.

• York would erupt for five runs in the top of the sixth inning on five hits. Denlinger, Jack Barry, and Brandon White would all deliver RBI-singles in the frame as the Spartans took their first lead since the first inning by a 9-7 score. The Captain retook the lead again in the seventh on Baham's third homer of the game and a two-run double by Cutchins as York trailed 10-9 with just two innings to play.

• The Spartans would tie the game again in the eighth as Denlinger, who tripled earlier in the inning, would score on a passed ball with two outs to deadlock the score 10-10. York would then load the bases in the ninth on singles by Jimmy Wiegers and Garrett Southern along with a walk to Craig Wiley to set the table for a grand slam to left field by Oberholtzer as the Spartans led 14-10 headed to the bottom of the ninth. Conor Miller would retire the Captains in order to seal the 14-10 victory in game two.

Notes: The Spartans are now 12-20 all-time against Christopher Newport … the win snapped a six-game losing streak to the Captains … this was the Spartans' first win against the Captains since March 19, 2016 in York and the first win at CNU since April 27, 2007 … the 14 runs are just the second time York has scored in double figures in the last eight games … the win in game two snapped a three-game losing streak for the Spartans … Grant Oberholtzer hit the fourth grand slam on the season for the Spartans … he also scored his 50th run making him the first Spartan to reach the 50-run mark on the year and is third in the CAC in runs scored … York struck out a season-high 15 times in the game two win … Austin Denlinger hit his fifth triple on the year in game two which leads the team and is tied for second-most in the conference this year … Brandon White leads the team with eight home runs and 49 RBIs, his 49 RBIs are also fifth-most in the conference … York is now 15-3 when they score in the first inning and 19-3 when they open the scoring in the game … they are also now 18-2 when they out-hit their opponent … when the Spartans score 10 or more runs, they are 13-1 on the season, with this also being the first win York has had when their opponent scores in double figures … York is now 9-7 on the road this season.
