Gettysburg Downs Green and White in Mid-Week Contest

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The York College field hockey squad dropped a 5-3 result at Gettysburg Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. Suffering their third setback of the 2013 campaign, the Spartans move to 0-3 on the season while the Bullets improve to 2-0.

Despite the hard-to-swallow early season mark, the Green and White have been in both of their prior two games and this one proved no different. Facing a 3-0 deficit in the first half, Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain) put the Spartans on the scoreboard late in the opening stanza as she knocked home a rebound in front of the Gettysburg goal.

York then cut that margin to a mere one just over ten minutes into the second half. Senior Kirsten Bridgers (Gaithersburg, Md. / Gaithersburg) tallied her third goal of 2013 and tightened the game at 3-2.

However, Gettysburg shut the door on the Spartan comeback bid as Erica Barbuto, who tallied a hat trick on the day, finished back-to-back goals. Barbuto lifted the Bullet advantage to 4-2 as she found the back of the Spartan cage following a penalty corner. Just 24 seconds later, Barbuto completed her hat trick and stretched the Gettysburg margin to 5-2.

With 2:39 left in the contest, York's Kailey Brewer (Hartley, Del. / Smyrna) provided the final goal as she finished after a pass from Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa. / South Western).

For the game, Gettysburg held a 23-13 advantage in shots and a 13-10 edge in penalty corners.

Alexis Bralow records the win for the Bullets as she notched four saves over her seventy minutes, while being aided by two defensive saves from Emily Van Horn. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md. / Mercy) registered nine stops for the Green and White.

York returns to action on Saturday, September 7, when they host Washington & Lee. Start time from Kinsley Field is slated for 2:00 pm.
