CAPE CHARLES, Va. – The York College golf team finished out the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Golf Championship in fourth place out of seven teams competing at the Bay Creek Resort Nicklaus Course in Sunday's final round. Freshman Tyler Newton led York through all three rounds and earned a First Team All-CAC selection as he placed sixth overall with a total score of 238 to finish 22 strokes over par.
Christopher Newport won the overall team title for the third-straight year as the Captains are in their third season as a member of the CAC. CNU compiled a team score of 936 to finish 72 strokes over par. Marymount placed second with a score of 967 and 93 strokes over par. PSU-Harrisburg rounded out the top-three with a score of 1004 to finish 139 strokes over par.
Newton led York wire to wire as he placed sixth overall with a 22-over-par 238 (78, 82, 78). The freshman led all players in par-three scoring average with a 3.17 stroke average. He recorded the sixth-most pars with 28 and fourth-most birdies with three. Newton also carded one of the two eagles of the tournament, which came on the par-five third hole in today's final round.
Newton is the ninth First Team All-CAC selection in program history since the CAC started sponsoring golf in the 2007-08 season.
Senior Tyler Keim closed out his Spartan career by placing 15th overall at the CAC Championship and second on the York squad. Keim carded a total score of 256 (89, 78, 89) to finish 40 strokes over par. The senior made par on 23 holes, which put him in a tie for second on the team.
Senior Ryan Wolbach closed out his Spartan career by placing 16th overall at the CAC Championship and third on the York squad. Wolbach carded a total score of 257 (83, 81, 93) to finish 41 strokes over par. He finished with the sixth-best par-three scoring average for the tournament with a 3.58 stroke average. The senior made par on 23 holes for the weekend.
Alex Colton saved his best round of the tournament for Sunday as the junior moved up five spots from the day before to finish 21st overall. Colton carded an 84 on Sunday to go with an 88 on Saturday and a 94 on Friday to bring his total to 266 on the weekend. The junior carded par on 17 holes and knocked in a birdie on two of the holes.
Brandon Hur rounded out the Spartan lineup as he finished in a tie for 22nd overall. The sophomore carded a total score of 267 as he made par on 18 holes.
Christopher Newport swept the conference awards for Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Jamie Coleman won his third-straight coach award and Sam Robinson took home the third-straight Player of the Year honor for CNU as he finished 13 strokes over par. Joe Corlett took home the Rookie of they Year award as he placed second and three strokes behind his teammate Robinson.
