YORK, Pa. – The York College men's swimming team claimed a down-to-the-wire 132-130 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon in York. The victory improves the Spartans to 5-3 on the season.
The Green and White had solid performances from numerous swimmers in each event. Those of note include Jamie Hicks and Cody Latchford. In support of Hicks and Latchford, Tyler Ziegler, Steven Mercer, Bryant Hughes, Andy Woods, Richard Janosky put together a successful meet.
Down to the final event, York went into the 200 freestyle relay owning a slight 126-119 lead. Despite not picking up the victory, York snagged second and third in the event to add six points to their side of the ledger. The Spartan relay team of Ziegler, James Kovach, Mercer, and Jack Gottschalk captured what was a critical third-place with a 1:32.72, just 47 hundredths of a second before Washington & Jefferson's fourth-place 1:33.19.
The Spartans got off to a terrific start, taking first-place in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Hughes, Hicks, Woods, and Janosky combined for a 1:43.74 edging out the second place Washington & Jefferson squad by over a second.
In the individual events, York continued its success. Latchford led all Spartans in the freestyle events. He earned first place points in both the 100- and 200- yard events with times of 50.02 and 1:49.68, respectively.
In the breaststroke events, The Green and White dominated claiming first through fourth in the 50-yard race, and first through third in the 100-yard contest.
Mercer claimed first in the 400-yard medley with a time of 4:34.28
The Green and White look to continue their winning ways as they return to action Friday, December 2, for a "Pink Day" tri-meet with Salisbury and Goucher.
