Huge Game One Comeback Powers Spartans Sweep of Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA  – The York College Spartan softball squad used a big offensive game in the opener followed by a shutout in the nightcap to power the Green and White to a double header sweep of Lycoming on Thursday. The Spartans won game one 18-8 in eight innings as York scored ten runs in the top of the eighth to secure the win. York completed the sweep with a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap. York improves to 13-5 overall while the Warriors fall to 9-6.

How It Happened

• The Warriors jumped out to an early lead as they struck for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kristi Weaver scored the first run with an RBI fielder's chice. Morgan Kunes then launched a two-run double to left center, pushing the lead to 3-0. The final run in the inning came when Heather Secord doubled home Kunes as the Warriors seized early control of the game.

• York got on the board in the top of the third thanks to a pair of Lycoming errors. Haley Hird reached on a throwing error to start the inning. The Warriors got the next two Spartans out but Brittany Myers reached on a on another error as Hirn scored to get the Spartans on the board.

• The Spartan offense erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth inning. York loaded the bases with one out. Junior Katie Maloney plated the first run of the inning with a single to short. Savannah Zittle then drew a bases loaded walk to push the second run home. Ashley Werner then cleared the bases with a single to right as York took a 6-4 lead. The Spartans could have done more damage but Joanna Marmo lined into a double play to end the inning.

• Lycoming would waste little time in tying the game in the bottom of the fourth as they loaded the bases courtesy of a pair of hits and a Spartan error. The Warriors got the first run of the frame on an RBI ground out. They got their second run on a sacrifice fly before York got out of the inning with a pop up to the pitcher.

• Lycoming got a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Warriors took an 8-6 lead. Rachel Duda, who had reached on a single earlier in the inning, came around to score on a Spartan wild pitch. Ashley Schoenstadt would score a key insurance run on another Spartan error to make it 8-6.

• York came roaring back in the seventh despite a highly questionable call in the frame. Marmo doubled to left to lead off the inning. Haley Hirn then walked to put runners at first and second with no one out. The runners each moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch. Savannah Galati ripped a pinch hit single to center field scoring Marmo. Hirn was called out attempting to score when it appeared she had gotten past the catcher before the tag was applied. Melissa Jurkiewicz then tied the game with a triple to right that scored Galati. Miranda Shandy then appeared to put the Spartans on top with a sacrifice fly but the Warriors appealed to third and it was ruled that Jurkiewicz left early, negating the run and keeping the game tied at eight.

• After escaping in the bottom of the seventh, the Spartan offense broke the game open in the top of the eighth as York plated ten runs to push out to a 18-8 lead. The Spartans scored their 10 runs on eight hits and no errors. Katie Maloney, Werner, Hirn, Galati, Jurkiewicz, and Zittle all had RBIs in the inning.

Game One Notes: The Spartans got 18 runs on 15 hits with a pair of errors while Lycoming got eight runs on 11 hits with three errors … York scored 12 unanswered runs after falling behind 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth … the 18 runs were a season high and the 10 runs scored in the eighth inning were a season high … in fact, the 10 runs in the inning were more than any other single game but the 12-1 win over Finlandia on March 1 … York scored the 18 runs with just two extra base hits in the game … York drew a season-high nine walks while the Spartans did not walk a batter in the game … the 11 hits allowed were the second highest total of the season for the Spartan pitching staff.

How It Happened

• York opened the scoring in the first as Joanna Marmo doubled after Ashley Werner was hit by a pitch to put runners at second and third. Haley Hirn singled to center to score Werner with the game's first run. It looked like the Spartans got another run when Carleigh Ruleman lifted a fly ball to left. It appeared that Marmo scored but, for the second time in as many games, the Warriors appealed and Marmo was ruled to have left early for an inning ending double play.

• York tacked on three runs in the third as Hirn had an RBI double to open the scoring. Carly Ruleman had an RBI ground out to drive in Hirn while Marmo scored on an error.

• The Spartans tacked on a run in the fourth as Katie Maloney doubled and scored on a Savannah Zittle RBI single.

• Jenny Coyle made her second career start a memorable one as the freshman right-hander twirled a six inning shutout. Coyle scattered three hits and walked just one batter in the victory.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans got five runs on eight hits with no errors while Lycoming got shutout on three hits with a pair of errors … the shutout is the third of the season for the Spartans … Jenny Coyle has now made two career appearances in the circle and has not allowed a run in nine innings of work … she has allowed just four hits, struck out six and walked just one … York did not draw a walk in game two for just the third time this year … York did not record a pitching strikeout for the first time all year.

What's Next: The Spartans jump into conference play on Saturday as they travel to Southern Virginia for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one Saturday in Buena Vista, Virginia is set for 1:00 pm.
