Spartan Softball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. – The York College softball program began the Kaitlyn Dulac era with its first opening day doubleheader sweep in six years as the Spartans defeated Eastern Nazarene, 7-3, in game one, followed by a 20-1 blowout over Elizabethtown in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alyssa Harhigh opened the scoring when she doubled to left in the bottom of the first inning to drive in Elle Meyer and Shyla Pastore.

• The Lions tied the game, 2-2, on a two-run home run by Bailey Olaveson in the fifth. Prior to giving up the home run, Spartan pitcher Ginger Lewis had the game on cruise control, retiring 12 of the first 15 batters she faced, including eight strikeouts during that span.

• The Spartan offense picked up their pitcher in the bottom of the fifth as Ellie Denlinger poked a two-run double through the left side to bring in Harhigh and Elle Meyer as York jumped ahead, 4-2.

• Harhigh came up big again in the sixth inning with a three-run double to clinch the win as York took a 7-2 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• York heled a 1-0 lead through the first three innings Kaela Fritz drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, while Taylor Lindsay retired nine of first 10 Blue Jay batters.

• In the top of the fourth inning, the York offense erupted for 18 runs 14 hits as Elizabethtown committed three errors. Alyssa Harhigh jump-started the rally with her three-run home run to put York ahead 8-0 and later produced another RBI to extend the lead to 14-0. Elizabethtown managed to get a run across in the bottom of the fourth to avoid the shutout.

Daphney Adams drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth to bring in Darby Stuart to put the finishing touches on the blowout win and the opening day doubleheader sweep.

 

NOTES

York scored 20+ runs for the first time since 27 runs on 24 hits against Johnson State on the 2018 Spring Florida trip … Alyssa Harhigh led the Spartan offense with six hits, three doubles and a staggering nine RBI as she compiled 12 total bases on the day … Elle Meyer and Shyla Pastore tied for the team lead with five runs on the day … the Spartans posted their first win in a season-opener since 2018 and captured their first opening day doubleheader sweep since 2014.
