ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College women's tennis team saw their 2018-19 season come to a close with a tightly contested 6-3 loss at Elizabethtown on Monday afternoon.
The Spartans finish the year at 8-7 overall while the Blue Jays improve to 10-3 with the victory.
The match was close from the start. The Spartans picked up an 8-7 (7-5) first doubles victory as Rachel Wagner and Gina Liguori combined to win a tight match against Lenean Riehl and Kailey Caroland. The Blue Jays cruised to an 8-0 second doubles win and then captured the third doubles match with an 8-7 (9-7) score as Madelyn Binder and Laura Gribble outlasted Jessica Sherman and Chloe Doyle.
The Spartans got off to a good start in the singles match as Wagner completed her stellar Spartan career with a 6-4, 6-4 first singles win. The Blue Jays responded with wins at second, third, and fourth singles to capture the match. Doyle earned York's third point of the day as she won the fifth singles match against Binder 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. Hannah Shinsky played well as she fell to Sarah Donner 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in the final match of the day.
Wagner finishes her career with an overall record of 37-15, good for second on the all-time singles wins list. She trails former Spartan great Katie Wagner by four singles victories as Katie Wagner completed her career with a record of 41-14. Rachel Wagner's .712 career winning percentage is second all-time. She finished one win behind Katie Wagner for career doubles wins as Rachel posted a career doubles record of 36-18, good for the school record in doubles winning percentage at .667.
Sherman finishes her Spartan career with 13 career singles wins and 19 doubles wins as Monday's match also concludes her career.
