Spartan Track and Field Has a Strong Showing at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, PA – The York College men's and women's track teams took a small contingency of student-athletes to the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg University on Saturday in Shippensburg, PA.

The Spartans, one week removed from the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference championships, took partial teams on both the men's and women's side as a number of athletes were looking to end their season on a high note.

A number of athletes established new personal bests while a pair of school records were set during the day.

• Senior Alex Palescandolo improved on his school record in the shot as he notched a best distance of 15.30 meters. Palescandolo established a new school record of 15.01 meters in the Spartans' home Twilight Meet on March 23. The previous record was set in 1977 as Palescandolo broke it by over two feet. He finished fifth in the event on Saturday. Palescandolo also placed 11th in the discus with a best throw of 42.66 meters.

• Junior Kathleen Cannon set a new school record in the 3K as she crossed the finish line a time of 10:25. Cannon set the record by 32 seconds and it also establishes a new Capital Athletic Conference record. Cannon's time placed her fourth as she was the top Division III finisher in the race. 

• Senior Alonzo Abraham set a new PR in the shot put as he recorded a best heave of 12.94 meters.

• Senior Alex Aponte set a new personal standard in the hammer throw as he boasted a best distance of 46.57 meters. Aponte finished ninth out of 31 in the hammer for the day.

• Sophomore Alex Smith had a strong showing in the 3000-meter steeplechase as he recorded a time of 9:47. That was a personal best for Smith in the event as he placed third in the race.

• A pair of Spartan sophomores, Andrew Erickson and Ryan Aug posted a pair of personal best times in the 3K. Erickson crossed the line in a time of 8:59 while Aug was three seconds back of Erickson with a time of 9:02. Erickson finished seventh in the event while Aug was ninth out of 23 runners.

• Junior Dylan Hartlaub earned a personal record in the 800 meters as he finished the race with a time of 1:59.48.

• Senior Darnell Tillman placed fifth in a highly competitive 100-meter dash as he finished with a time of 11.09. Tillman then placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.79.

Kevin Landis placed fifth in the pole vault with a best height of 4.25 meters.

• Freshman Jada Griffin-Howard was tenth in the 400-meter dash as she recorded a time of 59.96.

What's Next:

The Spartans have completed their team season but there is a potential for Darnell Tillman to earn an invitation to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Those berths will be announced on Saturday, May 21.
