Volleyball Drops Second Straight at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College volleyball squad dropped their second straight Capital Athletic Conference match on Friday as Mary Washington blanked the Spartans 3-0 in Fredericksburg, VA.

Score: York 0, Mary Washington 3 (25-14, 25-18, 25-19)

How It Happened:

• The Eagles jumped on the Spartans early in set one as they led 14-7 through 21 points in the opening set.  York cut the lead to five only to have the Eagles rip off six straight points to take a 22-11 lead. York would not get any closer than ten the rest of the way as the Eagles cruised to the 25-14 first set win.

• York bounced back and got off to a better start in set two as they led 5-3 very early. York eventually pushed out to a 10-6 lead but Mary Washington ripped off a 9-2 spurt to take a 15-12 lead. York drew to within one at 15-14 but the Eagles responded by scoring nine of the next 12 points to take a 24-17 before settling for the 25-18 set two victory.

• The third set saw the Eagles race out to another big lead. Mary Washington scored 12 of the first 16 points of the set as they asserted control early. York battled back, cutting the Mary Washington lead to two at 18-16. The teams exchanged points but then Mary Washington ripped off a 6-2 spurt to close out the set and the match, handing York the road conference loss.

Notes:

York is now 22-30 all-time against the Eagles as UMW has won five straight in the series … York's last win over the Eagles came on October 4, 2014 when they beat UMW 3-2 … York falls to 6-5 in matches decided in three sets … the Spartans played their second straight match without All-CAC middle hitter Madyson Whitcomb who is currently injured …  freshman setter Abby Diehl also missed the game due to injury … the Spartans have now lost two straight after winning five in a row … the Spartans have hit under .100 in their last two matches as they hit .056 against Salisbury on Wednesday and .075 against Mary Washington … York registered a season-low 26 kills in the loss … York is now 4-4 on the road this year … the Spartans are hitting .111 in conference play while they are averaging almost one full kill less per set in CAC play … York is averaging 1.95 blocks per set in CAC play, a mark that is better than their overall season average … junior Kierstin Grove had a season-high seven kills while she hit a career-high .583 in the game.

The Spartans will look to get back on the winning side of the ledger with a CAC match against St. Mary's at Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Wednesday night. The match has been designated as the Spartans' Dig Pink Match and will begin at 7:00 pm.
